iOS 4.0.2 (iPhone/iPod Touch), and iOS 3.2.2 (iPad) Fixes PDF Exploit Bug

Recently the on the device jailbreaking website jailbreakme.com used a PDF exploit to gain root access to your iOS device.

Apple today has fixed the hole for iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad users alike.

Naturally jailbroken users will not be a fan of this update as it will un-jailbreak their device.

Personally I do not jailbreak my devices – I have no need. So this security fix is much needed as I don’t want my iPod Touch hacked without my knowledge thanks to a pdf bug.

The update is very large at 380mb+ via iTunes.

Apple Adds Try Before You Buy App Section

Apple today added the “try before you buy” section to the iTunes app store.

There is no real trials, but rather a collection of “lite”, free versions of paid apps.

Games/Apps like the hugely popular angry birds are part of the section.

This is an obvious move to curb app piracy. App piracy on Apples devices is low, unlike Android where it’s up too 99%.

Hopefully this leads to more lite apps.

Apple Shutting Down Lala For Good May 31st 2010

Not unexpected but Apple is shutting the doors on Lala May 31st 2010. Lala is no longer accepting users, you can download music but only if you previously registered. Any remaining balance can be transferred to iTunes. Or you can request a check from Apple for the remaining amount. As of May 31st Lala will be completely unavailable. It’s no surprise that Apple is shutting down Lala (it always happens). Its an end of an era, but business is business.

iTunes 9.1.1 Out Now: Fixes Stability Bugs

iTunes 9.1.1 is now out. The update fixes 3rd party software crashes, 128kbps AAC syncing issues, and other stability/performance issues. The update is a large 92.44 mb. Don’t forget to update iTunes for the Apple Software Update screen in Windows, or the update manager on the mac.

HD iPhone Apps To Be iPad Only

We all knew that iPad will be getting its own round of the very same apps. There is a difference though. They will either have HD or XL in their title. Apps that work on iPad only will obviously be the ‘HD” versions of them because of the much larger screen size. Plants vs Zombies and others look like some of the apps that will be HD.

Now that means the apps in the app store will almost double size HD and non HD apps will have to have their own page. It will be interesting to see how many devs choose to make use of the larger screen. Hopefully most games will be upgraded to fit the large screen since the 2x zoom will reduce quality.

iTunes Song Downloads: Now 10 Billion Strong

Today Apple hit 10 billion song downloads!

10 Billion and Counting

See it happen:

10 billion song downloads means iTunes is a large success. Guess people do want to pay $1.20 per song (which I do too).

Congrats Apple.

Now Apple has done the same for Apps.

You can now do a web preview of iPhone apps.

Example: Super Monkey Ball 2

A nice and muchly needed preview.

For it to work you need to directly link to the app via the share button in iTunes.
