A fello blogger at Geek Juice alerted me that Telus will soon start unlocking phones in Canada.

That sounds good right? Well…sadly think again.

The unlock naturally wont work with CDMA phones (no sim card), so smartphones only.

Telus Mobility will offer unlocks to its Telus/Koodo (Koodo is owned by Telus) customers with the following limits;

  1. Must have a SIM Card
  2. Must be on a monthly plan
  3. Must be on a activated contact for at least 90 days

And for how much you may ask? $50. Oddly the same price as Rogers and Fidos unlocking rules.

Guess you know have a choice to leave Telus if you buy own your contract. Hurray.

Apple Hits The 10th Billion App Downloaded From App Store

January 23rd, 2011

Wow! Apple has one huge milestone to celebrate about!

Apple says that 10 billion (10,000,000,000) apps have been downloaded from the app store. That is 90% more than last year, or 9 billion more apps downloaded.

That is an insane increase in the apps that have downloaded, and that is new app downloads not updates.

Looks like the run away hit the iOS app store will just get bigger and better as the hours, days, months, and years go on.

iOS 4.3 will bring HotSpot to iPhone

Just as iPhone comes to Verizon (next month) it looks like iOS 4.3 will enable iPhone users to create a hotspot easily for other devices.

It’s essentially tethering, or sharing the internet connection on your phone.

It is unknown if it is just for Verizon or for AT&T and other Global carriers like Telus and Fido in Canada.

Hotspot for iPhone would be a very nice feature however considering it’s not done at the moment.

We shall see how this changes things.

VLC Media Player Removed From App Store – Is Apple Censoring Open Source?

VLC Media Player Removed From App Store Is Apple Censoring Open Source?

Image via Wikipedia

Softpedia is reporting the VLC media player app got removed from the iOS app store.

Now this isn’t the first, or really the last app to be pulled from the store.

But the question remains…why?

The VLC media player app for iOS allowed iOS (iPod Touch, iPhone, iPad) users to watch .flv and other things on their devices.

The VLC app also happens to be released as open source under the GPL.

So. Was the app pulled because it allowed flash and other files or because it was open source?

Naturally Apple hasn’t told the developer why it was pulled…just that it was removed.

Apple is well-known to pull apps for little no reason, guess we will have to add open source to the list.

Thanks Apple.

Cut The Rope for iOS Review

November 28th, 2010

I might as well do a game review…I haven’t in a while.

So today I will review Cut The Rope for iOS (iPod Touch, iPhone, and iPad).

The app is $0.99 (has a free version that’s limited). So its pretty cheap – and worth the price in my opinion.

In the game your goal is to get the candy that’s on a rope to a little critter called Om Nom. Om Nom likes to eat the candy, he was let at your door step when you start playing the game. I do have to admit he is a little cute (assuming).

The game is hard at times but its worth it, it’s never boring, and it’s always  a challenge. At times I find it really hard to put down the game…I’m just having too much fun.

The graphics are pretty outstanding, very well done.

Overall I would give this game a solid 9.5/10 its very well done, and I think you should check it out.

Check out the iOS version of Cut The Rope here. Free version is here.

Being able to edit on the go is nice, however its frustrating  that you can’t edit on the go with Google docs.

However that will change, in the next few days Google is updating the Google docs interface to work on mobile devices like iPhone, iPad, and Android.

Google has a demonstration video of the new interface below:

Why Are Adobe And Microsoft Considering A Merger? A: Flash

In the last hour the internet has exploded in rumors that Microsoft and Adobe will merge.

This as a result as send Adobe stock sky-high at over 10% higher than yesterday.

But buy would 2 huge companies consider such a colossal merger? Flash.

Specifically Flash on mobile devices – and the lack of on Apples devices.

Microsoft and Adobe want to merge so that they can say their products are mobile friendly flash friendly devices.

Is this ever going to happen? Of course not, it would be a direct violation of anti-trust laws.

But that the two companies met between closed doors means that they are both scared that Apple’s dominance of the market will leave no headroom, and that flash is the only way to get headroom.

Apple Finally Allowing Ringtone Making iPhone Apps

It’s good when apple relaxes its rules on iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad apps.

Apple is now approving Ringtone iOS apps (such as ringtone maker pro).

I don’t own a iPhone (rather a iPod Touch), but I can see how this could have been a serious hassle before. I mean we all want to easily make ringtones for our phones. Sure we can purchase them, or hack a song into one but can’t it just be easy?

Hopefully this means more useful apps (other than farting apps) to come to the app store.

Apple Relaxes iOS App Rules In Favor Of Flash Apps

September 9th, 2010

Image via Wikipedia

Apple out of the blue has changed its iOS developer rules to lessen the restriction on 3rd party apps.

Quote from Apple:

“The App Store has revolutionized the way mobile applications are developed and distributed. With over 250,000 apps and 6.5 billion downloads, the App Store has become the world’s largest mobile application platform and App Store developers have earned over one billion dollars from the sales of their apps.

We are continually trying to make the App Store even better. We have listened to our developers and taken much of their feedback to heart. Based on their input, today we are making some important changes to our iOS Developer Program license in sections 3.3.1, 3.3.2 and 3.3.9 to relax some restrictions we put in place earlier this year.

In particular, we are relaxing all restrictions on the development tools used to create iOS apps, as long as the resulting apps do not download any code. This should give developers the flexibility they want, while preserving the security we need.

In addition, for the first time we are publishing the App Store Review Guidelines to help developers understand how we review submitted apps. We hope it will make us more transparent and help our developers create even more successful apps for the App Store.

The App Store is perhaps the most important milestone in the history of mobile software. Working together with our developers, we will continue to surprise and delight our users with innovative mobile apps.”

This is good for app developers who can now make can make an app on pretty much any code base as long as it no longer downloads additional code upon app download.

It is unknown if this means that flash will come to the iOS devices, or flash games. We shall see.
