Apple September 1st Event: New iPod Models, iTunes 10, New Apple TV

The Apple September 1st Apple event came and gone here is what went down;

  • iPod shuffle now has the click wheel back and is smaller
  • iPod nano is now smaller and has the rumored touch screen – now has a clip
  • iPod touch now has HD video and front facing camera for FaceTime
  • iOS 4.1 will fix slow iPhone issues, proximity issues, and add game center
  • iOS 4.2 will bring iPad multitasking – wireless printing
  • New Apple TV is 1/4 the size, is streaming only – now has Netflix
  • iTunes 10 now has ping which is a music social network like LastFM changed interface and logo

Personally you can colour me impressed. The updates are what everyone was expect and what we all wanted really. The shuffle now has the click wheel back, the nano is now smaller so its easier to use, the 4th gen iPod Touch now has HD camera, and Facetime like the iPhone 4 (yay), and the new Apple TV now has Netflix and is now only $99 with streaming only.

The iPod touch is due for its 4th refresh, namely because it’s almost September when it does get refreshed.

Apple has sent out a newsletter saying that there will be a music focused event on September 1st 2010.

My predictions are;

  1. iPod Touch 4th Gen to feature match iPhone4
  2. Apple TV/TV rental change (cheaper?)
  3. Sales figures of iPad/etc

Hurray, the social discovery service Stumbleupon now has an App for iPhone and Android users!

In a blog post today at the stumbleupon blog, shows the features you get.

The app optimizes the content for mobile viewing, meaning new discovery are fast, and easy.

The StumbleUpon app also gives you a walk-through for new users.

I love the app, and you should check it out too. Just search for it in the Android market, or the App Store.

Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac

It’s weird to think that Office for mac 2010′s selling feature is that it’s now compatible with the windows version. Yup, you read that right.

Part of the compatibility is the catchup of features, so its more like the Windows version. Still no access though.

Watch the video below for more info.

iOS 4.0.2 (iPhone/iPod Touch), and iOS 3.2.2 (iPad) Fixes PDF Exploit Bug

Recently the on the device jailbreaking website jailbreakme.com used a PDF exploit to gain root access to your iOS device.

Apple today has fixed the hole for iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad users alike.

Naturally jailbroken users will not be a fan of this update as it will un-jailbreak their device.

Personally I do not jailbreak my devices – I have no need. So this security fix is much needed as I don’t want my iPod Touch hacked without my knowledge thanks to a pdf bug.

The update is very large at 380mb+ via iTunes.

Adobe Finally Adds GPU Accelerate To Flash Player Stable

It’s been years it seems that people have complained about the high CPU usage of flash on the Mac.

“Gala” has been in flash beta for some time now but with version 10.1.82.76 GPU acceleration is now active.

Hopefully this means Mac users can turn off flash block.

It’s been in Windows’ version of 10.1 since its been out.

GPU acceleration in flash has yet to come to Linux.

Apple Adds Try Before You Buy App Section

Apple today added the “try before you buy” section to the iTunes app store.

There is no real trials, but rather a collection of “lite”, free versions of paid apps.

Games/Apps like the hugely popular angry birds are part of the section.

This is an obvious move to curb app piracy. App piracy on Apples devices is low, unlike Android where it’s up too 99%.

Hopefully this leads to more lite apps.

Windows 7 Takes Over Vista In Second Most Used OS

Windows 7 is soaring for the top. This month new data shows that Windows 7 has surpassed Windows Vista in market share. This means that Windows 7 is now the 2nd most used OS (XP is first by a landslide).

Windows 7 now has a market share of 14%, XP is a juggernaut at 61%, and Mac OS X fallows at 2.5%.

iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad Jailbreaking Made Real Easy

While I am no fan of Jailbreaking, it is what everyone wants to do. Now while its legal in the USA (not Canada), jailbreaking has seemingly taken off.

There is now a browser-based (you read right) jailbreak for all iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPads. It couldn’t get any easier. Naturally however it voids your warranty if you don’t restore the device before servicing.

Visit jailbreakme.com on your Apple device and follow the screens.
