Ubuntu 10.10 alpha has a new installer. Improvements have been made to make the process easier to use. The new installer is simplified, and gives more of a walkthrough of the process. Much unlike in Windows 7 or Mac OS X snow leopard.

Browser tabs where a godsend when they where first designed, now its seen all over, but they can be improved. With more than 12 tabs you run out of “space” and have to scroll the tabs.
This is where Firefox Tab Candy comes in. It’s a new (alpha – as in may never be implemented) way to look at tabs. It’s kinda like expose for your browser tabs.
Watch the video below for the demonstration.

Recently Southgate in Edmonton went through an expansion. The mall has been 1 million square feet for months now. Southgate now has speedy LRT service, bus service, and a 21 century directory assistance helper.
Unfortunately I can’t find a photo for the directory assistance terminal. I can however say that it is a touch screen, and its a bit like sitepal in the sense an avatar welcomes you, and shows you where to walk to get to your store. For first time users it maybe a bit creepy, but it’s very useful (especially if you are trying to find the new Apple store located there!).
Southgate also has a huge above ground parking lot comparable to West Edmonton Mall. The Quality of Southgate mall also rivals WEM in the sense that expensive materials are used everywhere.
If you haven’t I recommended that you check out the LRT that goes to and from southgate (which is new), and the expanded mall.
You can also check out Southgate’s website for more information.

I find it annoying that you can’t watch a DVD in Windows XP, Windows Vista Basic, or in Linux (i.e. Ubuntu).
Thankfully though there is an easy fix!
The easy fix is VLC from videolan.
VLC is a opensource codec player. It allows you to play DVD’s, windows media, real player, divx, QuickTime, you name it, without the hassle of using (and abusing) bloat-ware.
It will play pretty much all formats that you can think of (except blu-ray/HDDVD), which is handy. You no longer need to spend $50 to have the right to play DVD’s and its legal
.
VLC will also download and play podcasts so it’s also a all-in-one podcast manager.
I love VLC, and I hope you will too.

You got a new computer, but what to put on it? If you have Windows then here is the list you should start with (Mac/Linux users, your computers come with what you want).
Note: Most software maybe pre-installed if brought from a major PC manufacture or store. All programs are free.
Picasa- Picasa allows you to edit your photos, tag them, and upload them with easy.
iTunes- iTunes plays your music, allows you to buy music, rent movies, tv shows, podcasts. Everything you need is there.
Speedfan- Speed fan monitors your computers temptress, only a real concern for laptop users.
Microsoft Security Essentials- MSE is a lightweight anti-virus/anti-malware protection application that will help you stay safe on the web.
Pidgin- Pidgin is lightweight, and allows you to talk to all your friends on many IM networks (MSN, Yahoo, AOL, etc)
CCleaner- CCleaner is perfect for cleaning your computers registry and history.
Auslogics Disk Defrag- Your computer needs its maintenance, defragmenting is part of that. Auslogics is faster, and better than what comes with Windows.
Firefox/Chrome- Firefox and Chrome are perfect web browsers. They are faster than IE, lighter than IE, have spell check, extension, and themes.
Camstudio- If you need to record video on your desktop then Camstudio does it for you.
Gmail- Gmail is a web mail email based service (think hotmail). It has 7GB’s of storage so its more than you need.
Google Docs/Open Office- Google docs is a web based word/powerpoint service. Open Office is basically Microsoft word without the cost.
These applications will help you get started with your new computer. Linux/Mac users already have programs like these, so if you want to save yourself from this then switch.

You may ask why I am calling adobe flash (player) the web version of crack. Well have you ever tried to visit websites without it? Almost every website will bug you for flash because 98% of users run it.
So it’s now a regular expectation that you have the plugin. If you don’t like flash because of its performance drain, or it’s vulnerability there is options. Click to flash will disable it from loading (like adblock plus) but still report you have it. This means you won’t get messages bugging you, but at the same time it tells web devs that you still use flash and don’t need an alternative.
Silverlight is an option but its lack of real support makes it real useless. HTML5 (chrome, ie9, safari, iPhone, iPad, Firefox, etc) introduces the ability to view videos and interactive advertising without flash. YouTube, vimeo, CNN, and other sites are embracing html5 so you have an alternative. Html5 is growing since it’s the only option in iPhone & ipad. Soon since it’s a web standard it will be used more. Currently there is an issue over codecs but that should be fixed soon. It would be nice to be able to browse the web without QuickTime, flash, or Silverlight. Hopefully html5 will be fully adopted in the up coming years.
