Google Adds Option To Turn Off Message Threading in Gmail

September 29th, 2010

Like message threading (all emails that are of one conversation appear as one listed sheet so its easy to keep track)? If you don’t then it doesn’t matter. Google in a blogpost said that they have added an option to gmail to turn off message threading.

While I see no need for this (its useful) its nice to have the option at least. I highly don’t think this will convert Gmail haters but I could be wrong.

AOL Acquires TechCrunch

The rumors are true. Aol has acquired tech crunch.

Michael Arrington has explained why he sold Tech Crunch to AOL. Basically it was because TechCrunch was having serious staffing issues and needed AoL’s help to keep TechCrunch (and CrunchBase) alive.

“The truth is I was tired. But I wasn’t tired of writing, or speaking at events. I was tired of our endless tech problems, our inability to find enough talented engineers who wanted to work, ultimately, on blog and CrunchBase software. And when we did find those engineers, as we so often did, how to keep them happy. Unlike most startups in Silicon Valley, the center of attention at TechCrunch is squarely on the writers. It’s certainly not an engineering driven company.”

AoL also owns Engadget so it is kinda conflict of interest for AoL to own 2 major tech blogs. But TechCrunch and Engadget are very different tech blogs technically.

Hopefully this helps TechCrunch like it has Engadget.

All I can say though is that I wont’ be a iPad killer. Until there is a real world demo of its battery life, flash performance, over all performance, and etc. I am impressed though, shows that Blackberry is still kicking.

Apple has released iTunes 10.01 for Windows and Mac users.

Fixes and improvements include;

“iTunes 10.0.1 makes it easier to share your favorite music with your friends on Ping. You can now Like or Post about music right from your iTunes library. You can also easily see the recent activity of a selected artist in your library, or of all artists and friends you follow on Ping using the new Ping Sidebar.

This release also provides a number of important bug fixes, including:

  • Addresses an issue where the picture quality of a video changes depending on whether the on-screen controls are visible.
  • Resolves an issue where iTunes may unexpectedly quit while interacting with album artwork viewed in a separate window.
  • Fixes a problem that affects the performance of some third-party visualizers.
  • Addresses an issue where the iTunes library and playlists appear empty.
  • Resolves an issue that created an incompatibility with some third-party shared libraries.”

The update is a small 46mb. So update now.

It’s good when apple relaxes its rules on iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad apps.

Apple is now approving Ringtone iOS apps (such as ringtone maker pro).

I don’t own a iPhone (rather a iPod Touch), but I can see how this could have been a serious hassle before. I mean we all want to easily make ringtones for our phones. Sure we can purchase them, or hack a song into one but can’t it just be easy?

Hopefully this means more useful apps (other than farting apps) to come to the app store.

Google has a lot of products I mean Google has; picasa, news, blogsearch, buzz, search, maps, youtube, chrome, chrome os, blogger, health, voice, checkout, reader, earth, adsense, adwords…the list goes on and on.

Staying on top of all that is really hard. There is RSS feeds, friends, twitter, etc but still its hard to keep up. Google just literally has way to many products to keep up on.

But naturally Google has found a way around that with Google New.

Google new is a site where you can keep track of every little and big update that Google does. Very handy indeed.

Netflix Comes To Canada – As A Streaming Only Service

Hurray Netflix has crossed the border icon smile Netflix Comes To Canada As A Streaming Only Service .

Netflix is now available in Canada as per netflix.ca.

But it’s not all fun and games. While it is only $8 for unlimited TV show and movie streaming…there is no DVD rentals. This is a caveat in Canada since we have seriously small bandwidth caps ranging from 40-200GB (60GB on avg.). This means you could only watch about ~10 movies a month if you where a light web user.

The DVD rental option would have knocked out blockbuster, and Rogers plus hard. But oh well, we will have to wait I guess.

AT&T: 500,000 iPads Active On Our Network

The iPad has been a runaway success for Apple, and apparently so has the 3G version.

AT&T is reporting that it has 500,000 Apple iPads on its network.

The 3G version of the iPad is $130 more so it is a premium. Which could be the reason why its only about 25% of all iPads sold.

Still shows that people in the US aren’t afraid to use AT&T for 3G coverage.
