Where The iPad Needs To Be Improved

28 Jan

Don’t get me wrong but the iPad is a great device, but it’s no diamond, there is where it needs to improve.

1. The name;

There is a lot tons of female bloggers that say that why didn’t Apple have a female behind the naming of the device.

As it was joked on Twitter how the iPad is very similar to a hygiene product women use daily.

I am not alone on this either, watch the video for CNN’s take on the name and the device.

2. Where is the camera(s)?!

The iPad is a netbook like computer without the keyboard. It’s keyboard is also large enough for most people to use.

So why is there no video camera, camera, OR iSight camera?

Sure maybe there is tons of patents against front facing camera’s for conference calling but Apple your not immune to breaking patents.

It you put in a iSight camera it could be priceless for business users for mobile conferencing, and doctors (hint: watch Avatar).

A video/camera like the iPad I can see as being less useful since the device is huge, although there are new patents filed for Apple including a video camera in the iPod Touch (bit late for that?).

3. Hi…SD cards called they want to be included.

An SD card slot in the iPad would be wonderful, as it would open up the iPad as a picture frame, granted it can be that but please do we always have to deal with iTunes?

With us having to deal with syncing less would allow us to use the device much more freely.

4. It’s iTunes jail-bait.

Like I said above…why does the iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad have a locked down OS?

If you connect it to a Linux computer without iTunes you can’t transfer files to it…and no media application will be able to sync to its device (unless you jailbreak it).

Apple please allow podcast subscription downloads on the iPhone OS, unlock the device so if we never want to touch iTunes we can connect it to our favorite media application and sync it that way.

The other iPod’s have disk mode for this, so please Apple loosen up.

5. Flash is a universal web codec…but you don’t want it (or so they say).

A major downfall to the iPhone OS is that you are so locked up that you will not support either a separate browser, OR flash.

Apple hello…wake up flash is used everywhere.

I can’t watch CNET TV (in its normal mode, there is a special iPhone OS mode), Driving Television, Vimeo, Magma, CNN or the like..only YouTube.

While HTML5 can fix this, it’s still beta, the iPhone OS does support HTML5, but currently YouTube/Vimeo’s HTML5 support needs to have H.264 codecs. (That’s why it doesn’t work in Firefox, Firefox only wants to support Ogg video since H.264 needs licensing).

So until then all I will see is the crippled mobile version of many video websites because Apple wants its “Smartphone” OS to be weaker to the Android OS.

The iPad is a large device with custom Apple hardware so you can unlock Flash support on that device.

Some say that flash is not supported because Apple wants to lock people to the App store, or that flash is a major security risk (it is).

6. We (the consumers) want Multitasking, and we want it now!

Granted the iPhone/iPod touch has weak hardware so multi-tasking may not be the best (although Android fully shows how it can be good, and bad).

The iPad is fast, it’s large, and it needs multi-tasking.

Like you said Apple you are the worlds largest mobile device company, so not support multi-tasking (beyond system apps) is a major let down.

It can handle it, so add it.

7. A HDMI port wouldn’t hurt.

HDMI is a great technology 1080p video and surround sound in one cable.

One major problem, the only Apple device that supports HDMI (without an adapter!) is the Apple TV.

HDMI across Apple’s whole product line (ignoring iPods/iPhone) would be a major boost to Apple.

People want to connect their device to their TV, so much so it’s practically a standard now in the Windows world.

Granted the iPad supports projectors…we don’t have projectors at home…only businness’ do.

Things the iPad did right.

  1. ePub book format (DRM free!) it’s a huge plus, that knocks the wind out of the kindle.
  2. It’s cheap $500-900 good price for it to tell like hotcakes.
  3. The display was clearly made for social interactions. IPS support allows you and your friend to see the screen the same without the funky colors.
  4. It’s not to big, and not to small. 9.7 inch’s Apple clearly found out what is the best size for a tablet.
  5. It’s a game changer. Like the iPhone during the iPad’s presentation company’s (HP, Sony, Microsoft, etc) where already scrambling to make a product like the iPad, it’s clearly a netbook killer.
  6. Wifi+3G (on some models)? Win win. Plus the cheap data rates from AT&T Apple has clearly asked more from AT&T.
  7. Ship it unlocked. Hurray while it’s still iTunes jail-bait it’s no longer carrier jail-bait.

So while the device is baking till March… April for 3G Apple you should add some things the iPhone OS while you can!

One think I'd like to see announced is that the 3G coverage can be bundled with existing AT&T iPhone service.
