New Survey Suggests We Spend More Time On The Internet

December 23rd, 2009

Overall time on the internet is up, a new survey result shows.

While some people (like me) find this to be not unsurprising, others do.

The average time on the internet is now 13 hours a week.

The age groups that spend the most time online are those aged 30-39 (18 hours) and those aged 25-29 (17 hours) and 40-49 (17 hours). -Tech Crunch

It’s surprising that teens (13-19) don’t spend much more time online…must be cellphone usage.

So are you surprised that we are slowly spending more of our lives crawling through the internet (email is excluded)

How To: Use WordPress’s Image Editor

December 22nd, 2009

WordPress has recently received a new feature image editing.

New users will not know how to do this so I have made a video on how to edit an image easily in WordPress.

Enjoy icon smile How To: Use Wordpresss Image Editor

For those who can’t view video here is a text description.

  1. Either from media, or from the uploaded image tool select the image.
  2. Click on edit image.
  3. Note: Crop is auto selected.
  4. Edit the image as necessary (rotate, crop etc).
  5. For cropping you need to drag your mouse over the area you want to edit.
  6. Then click on the crop icon.
  7. Then click on save.
  8. The edited image will be saved.

The process is the same for self hosted word press blogs, or blogs at wordpress.com

Note: After an image is inserted into a post it cannot be edited. You have to remove the image, then go the insert image, media library, select the image, and then edit it.

Free Windows Clone Built on Silverlight

December 22nd, 2009

Very cool, Softpedia announced today that there is a open source clone available to the public online.

While it is not from Softpedia it is a useful “Web OS”

The Web OS is Windows4all.

It is open source, and is not based on Microsoft’s Vista OS but looks and acts just like it.

The free Web OS runs off of silver-light and is fully functional.

Windows4all features a web browser, rss reader, twitter client, and more.

So Mac/Linux users why don’t you play around with a free clone that won’t go haywire.

While its not free of bugs it does work.

The OS is custom to every user so you can tweak the rss reader and such.

Microsoft In A Rush To Fix Word By January 11th

December 22nd, 2009

Microsoft has lost a lawsuit over a XML patent and is in a rush to fix it.

The lawsuit was over how word handles .xml files.

Microsoft says that it will patch Office 2007 by January 11th, 2010 to keep it on the shelf.

Office 2010 is immune to this because it does not contain the code that infringes on the patent.

“It’s getting closer and closer to check-writing time for Steve Ballmer, as the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit has just upheld a decision that would see Microsoft Word and Office banned from sale starting January 11. If you’ll recall, Microsoft lost a patent infringement suit against XML specialists i4i back in May when it was found that Word’s handling of .xml, .docx, and .docm files infringed upon i4i’s patented XML handling algorithms, but the injunction against further Word sales was put on hold pending the results of this appeal.” -Engadget

Palm Pre Now Only $0 at WirelessWave (Canada)

December 20th, 2009

The palm pre is now only $0 at WirelessWave.

It is $0 after a 3 year bell contract, which is the catch.

While it is nice to see a smart phone hit $0 here in Canada the question is who cares?

I don’t because I would rather get a Blackberry Storm from Telus (which is $300+3 yr).

The Pre could be competitive for the holiday season, if people go out and buy one.

So good luck Wireless Wave.

WordPress 2.9 Out!

December 18th, 2009

My guess was right.

WordPress 2.9 is now out.

The coolest new stuff from a user point of view is:

  1. Global undo/”trash” feature, which means that if you accidentally delete a post or comment you can bring it back from the grave (i.e., the Trash). This also eliminates those annoying “are you sure” messages we used to have on every delete.
  2. Built-in image editor allows you to crop, edit, rotate, flip, and scale your images to show them who’s boss. This is the first wave of our many planned media-handling improvements.
  3. Batch plugin update and compatibility checking, which means you can update 10 plugins at once, versus having to do multiple clicks for each one, and we’re using the new compatibility data from the plugins directory to give you a better idea of whether your plugins are compatible with new releases of WordPress. This should take the fear and hassle out of upgrading.
  4. Easier video embeds that allow you to just paste a URL on its own line and have it magically turn it into the proper embed code, with Oembed support for YouTube, Daily Motion, Blip.tv, Flickr, Hulu, Viddler, Qik, Revision3, Scribd, Google Video, Photobucket, PollDaddy, and WordPress.tv (and more in the next release).

So update your wordpress installations! You can do it by going to Tools –> Upgrade, or downloading it from wordpress.org.

CES Vapor Ware

December 17th, 2009

CES, aka Customer Electronics Show every year hosts tons, and tons of new technology.

Although some of that technology never makes it out the door.

CNET has a video on the Top 5 Vapor Wave from CES.
