September 26th, 2009

Windows 7 might hit retail pc’s as early as October 12th. Why? Because OEMS could start pushing them out as soon as that date. Due to them getting there keys, and ok to push out.

Although with that said its unlikely its going to be out before October 22nd.

News: XP-Windows 7 upgrades offically need a clean install.

September 25th, 2009

Thinking of upgrading to windows 7 when it comes out on October 22nd?

Here is some things to watch out for:

1. Windows XP (and lowers) need a clean install to windows 7. Which means you will need to back up your files before you do the upgrade.

2. Windows Vista to windows 7 upgrade is possible, but clean install in recommended. Why? A clean install allows you to start fresh, to get rid of the old. While an upgrade is possible its better to just do it clean. Note: A Clean install on upgrade means you must have a different partition and you must be logged into the old one for it to work.

Google Gmail suffers another outage.

September 24th, 2009

This morning at around 7:30am google gmail suffered an outage to a small percentage of users.

The issue was identified and fixed an hour later. Google says it was an issue with contacts that slowed gmail down.

This is the 3rd time since feb, and the 2nd time this month.

As a result of gmails less than 99% uptime its shares where down 0.3% at $497.10.

This has many people worried about how reliable a cloud based service can be, and its effects if it keeps going down since google was a web service for everything.

Are mac users really immune to virus/malware infections?

September 21st, 2009

Myth: Mac users are immune to virus infections.

Fact: No, although there is a lot less floating around there still out there for macs (and that goes for linux users to!).

Although Apple keep says safe and free from malware infections they couldn’t be more wrong. The reason mac users currently have a low risk is because they only have <12% of the market share. It’s much more cost-effective to go after the bigger share (windows).

This couldn’t be made more true than Mac OS X 10.6 coming with malware protection (you read right). 10.6 snow leopard comes with few malware identification to block the obvious malware (like the free i-Life bot-net). It’s updated via software update.

Apple at one time even post a document saying macs are not free from infection but has since pulled it.

So here is my advice. Avoid the bad and obvious ways to get infected (search for tips to prevent from being infection on this site), and you’ll be fine.
