Ever had the need to check a file to see if it’s the latest malware? Well here are a few sites that will do that for you. Although all are limited to 20MB, so if its larger, just stay safe.
1. NoVirusThanks. This website is handy. It can scan a file but I use it for its other feature. Scan a url. NVT will scan a web address to see if it is infected, good to do an overall website check.
2. Virus Total The second one is virus total. We all pretty much have used this website at one time. The great thing about VT is that it has 41 scanners (as of this post) and will list all sorts of stuff. If it’s a common file a threat expert link will be near the bottom of the page.
3. ThreatExpert This website is really handy. You upload a file, wait 5 mins and it will email you what the file did on their sandbox machines. It’s also scanned to see if its infected.
4. VirSCAN.org Last but not least is virscan. Virscan in my opinion is better than virustotal as although is has a few less engines listed it has heuristics enabled, and live reports. On top of that it will even scan files compressed (up to 20 files) with .zip and rar! Even if its password protected with virus or infected! Plus like they send missed files to the company who missed them so they can add it to their detection. Very nice.
So if the website looks bad scan it, if the file looks bad scan it. Though even if the file passes all tests just make sure you stay cautious.
Stay safe out there!
